The IUCN Red List classifies the species as Endangered, and it is endangered by human population development, habitat loss, and migration, with commercial poaching being the most serious threat. ![]() There is no exact population estimate, but it is estimated to be between 29,500 and 50,000 people. ![]() Bonobos reside south of the river, separating them from the descendants of the popular chimpanzee, who live north of it. Since the two species are poor swimmers, the establishment of the Congo River 1.5–2 million years ago may have resulted in the bonobo's speciation. The bonobo meaning, together with the common chimp, is the nearest living relative to humans. Due to the region's political uncertainty and bonobos' timidity, there has been very little field research performed on the species in its natural environment. The omnivorous species can be found in both primary and secondary forests, like swamp forests that are periodically flooded. The bonobo can be found in the Congo Basin, which covers 500,000 k m 2 (190,000 sq mi) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Panins are the taxonomic term for members of the chimp/bonobo subtribe Panina (which is mainly made up of the genus Pan).īroad legs, a dark face, pink lips, a tail-tuft from maturity, and separated long hair on the head differentiate the bonobo. Despite the fact that bonobos animal are not subspecies of the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), but instead separate species in their very own right, both species are often addressed to as chimpanzees or chimps. By showing participants videos of common great ape gestures instead, we found that people can understand these gestures, suggesting that they may form part of an evolutionarily ancient, shared gesture vocabulary across all great ape species including us.The bonobo, also known as the pygmy chimp and, less commonly, gracile chimp or the dwarf, is an endangered great ape and one of two species in the Pan genus and the second one being the common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). ![]() Graham adds, “All great apes use gestures, but humans are so gestural-using gestures while we speak and sign, learning new gestures, pantomiming, etc.-that it’s really hard to pick out shared great ape gestures just by observing people. The authors say that it remains unclear whether our ability to understand specific great ape gestures is inherited, or whether humans and other great apes share an ability to interpret meaningful signals because of their general intelligence, physical resemblance, and similar social goals. The results suggest that although we no longer use these gestures, we may have retained an understanding of this ancestral communication system. Video playback experiments have traditionally been used to test language comprehension in non-human primates, but this study reversed the paradigm to assess humans’ abilities to understand the gestures of their closest living relatives for the first time. Providing participants with contextual information about what the apes in the video were doing only marginally increased their success rate in interpreting the meaning of the gesture. They found that participants performed significantly better than expected by chance, correctly interpreting the meaning of chimpanzee and bonobo gestures over 50 percent of the time. Over 5,500 participants were asked to view 20 short videos of ape gestures and select the meaning of the gesture from four possible answers. Researchers tested people’s understanding of the 10 most common gestures used by chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes) and bonobos ( Pan paniscus) using an online game.
